Leisure and Light showcases a new body of work by Gordon Smedt. This latest series of paintings confirm Smedt’s abiding interest in objects familiar and relatable that have taken on a life of their own. In describing his work, Smedt tells us “I create patterns of color and form which gives movement to the inanimate object. I also use strong light and shadow to help accentuate its forms.”

Large-scale canvases conjure memory and narrative, real and imagined, of what is often forgotten, overlooked, or discarded, yet still retain a powerful history. Smedt says, In capturing the history of each object, my process uses multiple built-up layers of drawing, painting and textures. After completion, my hope is to leave a trace of each
step of my process, which relates to life's patina forever embedded on each object.”

Subjects are rendered with Smedt’s characteristic luscious, bold color and energetic wit, infused with a soulful vitality that transforms them from “still-life” to portraits. Encountering the compositions one finds the intimacy of reuniting face to face with familiar friends.
