Ostensibly Feminine
August 28 – September 30, 2019
While the paintings are overtly feminine, the work exudes strength, power, and assertiveness. Traits we traditionally view as masculine in western society. With this new body of work, Brigitte is exploring the concept of dualism; how seemingly opposite or contrary forces may be complementary. We question what is it that determines what is ‘feminine’ or ‘masculine’ or is there something else – either in between, or neither?
Large floral depictions pervade the paintings, rendered purely abstractly to exquisitely detailed through digitally reproduced flowers that are collaged onto the canvas. Brigitte delights us with a feast of color and texture and the collaged elements add a level of surprise. The floral landscape obscures a dark underlayer that Brigitte leaves evident in various locations providing the strength that anchors the flirty florals to create the dualistic composition.
The exhibition also features new figurative and abstract work from Brigitte.
